Running UT2004 on Windows 10

Postby EmanReleipS » Sun 16. Aug 2015, 01:00

I installed Windows 10 today and I have no problems playing UT. It runs just like yesterday on Win 7. No need to reinstall the game.

What are your experiences? Any problems and how did you solve them?

I think that UT2004 should have no problems on Win10, at least GOG and the Steam version shouldn't have.

Player FOE reported in game that he could not play it in fullscreen mode. I think 2bowls said the same thing.

If the game works fine on windowed mode (win10) and crashes in fullscreen you can solve it by changing ReduceMouseLag to False in ut2004.ini

works for me ^^

Hi folks,

Regarding Win 10, I began tesing UT2K4 on Win10 in the very early preview builds because of a rumour I picked up on the DirectX forums a while back.

The rumour turns out to be basically true, DirectX 12 as supplied by MS with Win10 has been heavily changed compared to DX9 which UT2K4 uses, running a DX9 game under DX12 causes lots of problems simply because many functions are now interpreted by DX12 rather than being run in their original form as in DX10 & DX11 (Windows 7 & 8)

The result of this is shockingly bad performance on Win10 for DX9 games like Ut2K4, using either ATI or NVIDIA cards makes no difference as it's DirectX that is the core problem. To make matters worse, even resorting to using OpenGL is no use because the implementation of it under Win10 is also pretty pathetic.

The only advice I can give having run it in both 32 & 64 Bit modes, with and without compatibility (yes it can be made to work in both) is stick to 64bit and whatever you do don't try and up your mouse speeds or network speeds too much at all, Windows 10 is a hybrid and a pretty bad one at that, there is a performance drop of about 25-30% in DX9 games on Win10.

If you really want to bang your head against a table with rage, try running Crysis3 on full detail on a PC using Win 10 that can easily do it in Win 7, you will literally be able to stop at some points and watch the screen redraw it's that bad!

It's strange that even the DX12 demos I've seen don't run well on Win 10 at the moment, UT4 thankfully isn't reliant on DX12 and currently only suffers about a 14% performance hit. I'm sure when they get around to optimising the code it will be a lot better.

To give you a general idea, I run a PC that can always hit a framerate of 200FPS on any UT map offline and many will still hit 170FPS+ online if I up the netspeed in Windows 7, the same PC using Windows 10 struggles to even hit the 90FPS base level I consider playable.

There's nothing to patch Crazy, MS has made it clear there will be very limited support for DX9 games in WIN10 at release and deep in the wording of the WIN10 beta license was something like "Microsoft in no way guarantees any previous DirectX library functions will continue to be present in future updates to Windows 10"

I think they'll simply kill DX9 & DX10 support in future updates to force users to use games and apps from the new App Store rather than using old stuff like UT2K4

Even many CADCAM programs written using DX9 functions are failing under windows 10 - some with licenses costs upwards of £5k!

Oh no, don't tell me, Solidworks and Solid CAM by any chance?

So will the future for UT2k4 be using a Linux based OS?
I tried to drown my sorrows, but somehow they learned how to swim...

Solidworks runs like an absolute dog under Win10 ;-)

Catia and NX are also suffering, although NX9 is doing a little better as they've released a service pack to cure many of the problems.

Installed win10 3 weeks ago, and i haven't encountered any problems at all, it was working out of the box. that of course means UT2004 is working just as it was before. i had problems when i have switched to win8, but not this time. Don't have many games installed yet, but the ones that i have are working
