ûRíñë + Connection Problem (help)

Hey, just joined the forums so I thought I'd say a bit about myself and hopefully some of you guys can help me with my connection problem :)

About me:
I use the name "ûRíñë" on here and UT2004 because my last name is Euringer, and a nick name I used to have was urine, so yeah. I've been playing UT2004 since 2004 and took a 3 year "vacation" around about 2008. I used to play loads and loads of trial maps, hence the crazy bunnyhopping and pointless walljumping - but I think it looks cool :D
I am learning how to use shock combos effectively so that I don't just spam flak all the time, but it's taking a while since everyone else seems to be able to do it and I keep getting fragged (any tips would be appreciated! )

My connection problem:
A lot of you have probably seen me jumping about trying to kill you and then I'll freeze and hover, sometimes in mid air and sometimes on the ground. It lasts for about 3-4 seconds, and in that time if I try to move or jump or anything it's like I have a short elastic band attached to my player and I keep snapping back instantly, I can't move very far either before it snaps me back (so it appears like I might be floating in the air, but I am actually falling and snapping back to mid air very quickly). And after 3-4 seconds, it stops. It's pretty f*cking annoying :x
It happens every say, 15 minutes and only in UT2004 - on other online games I don't experience it at all. I have been accused of hacking and all that stuff, but I'm writing this here so people can understand I'm not, you can spectate me and wait for it to happen if you want and you'll see it's a pretty bad hindrance since I cant aim and I rely heavily on mobility (plus it happens randomly in stupid/awkward situations and places, which I'm pretty sure I wouldn't do if I was hacking - which I am not)
I know squat about computer hardware (I'm a software guy) and my roommate deals with all of the hardware and internet connection, and about a week ago he said the router wasnt working. He got a new one (exactly the same as the previous one) and it works normally in every aspect apart from now I have this "rubberbanding" problem, just in UT2004.
(oh yeah, I said to RottenToTheGore and s°rcery ingame that it was just my modem being weird because my actual problem is too complicated to explain ingame, sorry about the suspicion  )

tl;dr: I keep getting stuck for about 3-4 seconds every 15minutes and my player is immobile in that time, can anyone help?
inb4 use cable, because I can't

I have a:
Netgear Router (Virgin Superhub)
And I have to connect to it via:
Wireless network card (with aerial)

Thank you guys and happy fragging :D

Hey Urine, welcome to the forum

I've always had problems with the shock riffle as well. I've found the best way is to fire the ball and then move backward without touching the mouse, as long as you are not walking over bumpy ground you can wait until someone jumps in front of the ball and then fire. After that it's just trying to learn that instinctive knack of knowing how far to move your mouse when you walk/jump/boost jump.

As for the connection problems, join the queue :D As it's only happening in UT2004 it would suggest that it's the game settings which a causing the problem. First try turning "Dynamic Netspeed" off in the in-game settings and then setting your connection speed manually. Go to ...Unreal Tournament 2004/system folder and open the file "User.ini". Scroll down to the sub-heading "[Engine.Player]" and find the line "ConfiguredInternetSpeed=*****". Try changing it to, say, 7000 and leave it for a night. Next night change it again to 7500. Keep moving it up and see if there is any improvement. The highest setting is 10000.

Other than that I don't know of any other game settings which could possibly help.

Outside side of the game you could try:

Turning off any power saving settings your wireless card my have.
Installing/reinstalling the latest drivers for your card.
Changing the wireless channel of your router (InSSIDer is a good program for this).
Use a program such as wLan Optimizer to stop windows making any dynamic changes while you are playing.

I can't think of anything else. I'm sure other here will be able to offer you much more informed advice.

All the best.

Hey, umm... urine (yeah, that one might take a few tries for me to get used to -_-). Besides the stuff Cat already mentioned, here's 2 more thoughts:

- You mentioned living with a roommate who also "deals with all of the hardware and internet connection," which implies he's a computer-savvy enough person to warrant the consideration of whether your hampered experience when playing UT online might have something to do with what he is doing during that time in terms of bandwidth consumption. Does he tend to download heavy stuff regularly - say, entire games over Steam or other stuff through torrents - and might not even make exceptions during when you're lagging n' fragging? The way you describe your net experience with CEONSS (desyncing and abrupt adjustment to the server's version of your position) makes it sound like you're having stints of packet loss that last 3-4secs at a time. Might he have changed something in the router's QoS settings giving priority to some other time-sensitive service, like Skype, instead or have altered your connection's MTU size (applies to xDSL connections and kinda unlikely, but still)?
- Playing online FPSes over a wireless setup is a notorious source of problems. A cable connection to the router, if feasible, would be a much better setup in terms of alleviating client-side lag. Throughout this game's life I've come across a few threads discussing exactly the effects of such a setup and containing info and suggestions for optimizing it as much as possible, but it's been years ago since I came across the last one and, for the life of me, I can't even remember in what community that even was; sorry 'bout that. Point is, do some googling about UT, routers, wireless n' lag and that might be just the thing to set you on your way to a better experience by its own.

Oh, and welcome to the msg board.

Hi there Urine, good to see you! That nickname is taking the "P"

Sometimes the server does weird things, sometimes it's a problem at your end. Last night was odd. Generally lag free, but sometimes would freeze up for a couple of seconds. Then in Magic Isle I was in a Kracken driving along happily by myself and suddenly the screen started rolling and tumbling over and over again at a fast speed. I had to disconnect and then reconnect. Sometimes you will just fall through the map for no reason and be stuck there in limbo, unable to do anything, but not dead either. The map Kingdom used to be a problem for me until a few months ago. Everyone else could see fine, but for me I could not see further than about a metre in front of me, it was like being in a dense fog. Other problems I've noticed are things like the sights on the Hellbender being out of sinc with the targeting sights, or trying to get in and out of vehicles and the server won't let you in or out, or worse, you get killed instantly when you get in the vehicle to be told it crushed you! Another annoying one is when you are firing and you hear the sound and the gun firing animation, but you don't actually fire anything. Then you have to drop out and re-join to fix the problem.

The funniest one I ever saw was in Bridge a few weeks ago, Anik and Binosours were stuck up against each other in one of the small alcoves, with both of them sort of running on the spot into the wall, it looked quite rude and very funny! I nearly fell off my chair I wanted to take a screen shot but I was laughing too much!...then the next thing I knew Anik had shot me in the back even though she was still running into the wall on my screen.

These things are annoying, but I am actually amazed that the technology works at all...all the data from computers thousands of miles apart coming together, computed and then sent back out again, it's quite mind boggling.

As Pegasus says, I would not advise using wireless to play. A good solid wired connection is likely to be much better and reliable. Wireless signals vary in intensity all the time, you don't want your game to be ruined by a cat walking past your router during a crucial moment!

LOL, dunno about Bisou but that was my kangoo-bunny-hop-lag-g.y-shot

Hello here ûRíñë !

Concerning the combo shock, i would suggest you:
-in a first time, stay in the same path than your shock core. You can move forward or backward during that (avoid to stay static or you'll often die). Then make your combo when you want.
Once you'll have perfected that way, you'll be able to try better combos.

-in a second time, shoot your shock core, then try to move left and right. Comeback in the path of your shock core, then do the combo when you want.
This way helps you to avoid easily enemy's attacks.

- in the last time (but it's not easy, i'm currently trying to perfect this one, takes me a lot of time), you can try all what you want. Jump combos, dodge combos, etc... You'll feel power in you :gun:

Hope i could help you,
Kent'

Hey all, thanks for the warm welcomes :D (and humorous ingame anecdotes Xac  )
Extra thanks to Pegasus and Cat1981England for giving me a whole bunch of solutions, I just got back from work so I'll tinker about with the User.ini and other things which will hopefully work :)

I'll see you all on CEONSS tonight, feel free to laugh at me and frag me when I inevitably freeze somewhere precarious
Oh yeah, I use the UEd quite a lot (mostly for maps), so make sure you check out the "Creative Corner" where I'll probably be most of the time, either asking questions or presenting WIP maps for your feedback. Thank you all again :)
