UT2K4 on Linux

I've got a 7 yr old lap top and I'm planning to use it as a spare machine for LAN parties etc. It runs UT just about, although not great. It's got XP on it, which is in a bit of a mess as it's not been maintained properly. I could re-install XP, but as win XP is only going to be supported for a couple more months, it doesn't seem worth it. There's no point trying to put win7 on such a machine, so I was thinking of a Linux install. Does anyone have a recommendation, and is there a tutorial I can follow for putting UT onto a Linux machine? Is the performance likely to be better or worse with Linux vs win XP?

I personally found UT2004 performance on mint to be a lot worse then on xp plus there was an awful lot of reading up and messing around to get the sound to work. But there's no harm in trying if you're going to format anyway.

Xac, you should ask our elect nub, he's been running UT on Linux ever since I know him. That's probably also the reason why we see him only very rarely

It's a Dell Inspiron 6400, CPU: Intel T2080 1.7 GHz, 1 GB RAM GPU: Intel 945GM.
What's the verdict? Is it worth trying to upgrade the RAM?
The other option is that I have a Zotac Zbox nano I could bring to the LAN party, but then I would need a monitor. I've had that for a couple of years and not really taken it out of the box, let alone put an O/S on it, or tried running UT on it. Got it for a project that never happened...

You're going to have to turn down all the settings to play UT2004 on a Intel 945GM. Upgrading the RAM will definitely help. You could also try

Thanks for the suggestion, tried it but sadly it didn't help much. I think I'll try the zbox nano and see if that's any good...
