Just want to know how many agree that the map voting system is overated with the points being used to determine the next map.

Updated the duration of the poll !!

I asked some ppl on the server about it and it seems that most of them prefer the new point based system.
At first I also like it but if you think about the pros and cons I guess the old one holds the lead.

The new point based system punishes players that joined pretty late during a match:
They cannot get enough points to matter in the vote even if they are good players

The "not so good" players get punished all around because they will mostly never get enough points to matter much in votes overall
Sometimes the vote could easily be decided by 2-3 very good players with many points even if there are like 20 ppl on the server

In the end the old one was more "democratic":
Every player has their own opinion about the next map that should be played. Every opinion counts the same - no matter if its that of an average or a skilled player. To me this sounds way more "fair"

Thanks for starting the vote Small and for providing a reasoned argument Nark  I've been meaning to bring this up for awhile and now that everyone has got use to this voting system, i think we can decide whether to keep it or not.

One of the most common complaints on the server is that the same maps are played over and over, this is why we've been spending time trying to improved maps which are down the bottom of the roster such as Urban, ChainsIsle2-T32, Crossfire/MoonDragon etc One of the positives to come out of this voting system trial has been an increase in the variety of the maps being played.

- The number of maps which are played less then 10 times a month has gone down from 40% to 30%
- The number of times the top 29 maps are played is down from 74% to 66%

A negative side to this voting system has been that there tends to be runs in the type of maps being played. If a map such as Minus is on the "tank" players tend to get high scores and then vote for another tank map such as Nevermore. This is a particular problem with the DM maps which can be played one after the other for an hour or two.

Regarding the "not so good players", i'm not sure i agree that they are "punished". By and large the players who get high score play regularly and know the maps fairly well. Because they have a greater say in the next map they can make a more informed vote, for example when it comes to the size of the next map, which should mean a better match for everyone including the "not so good players".

A nice side affect of this is that some players who tend to mess about when a map they don't like is on have started to be much more active.

I agree that it is undemocratic, however, CEONSS has never been truly democratic. Even though everyone can have their say on what maps are on the roster and are encourage to post here about any maps people think should be added, removed, edited, it has always been decided by the admins and not by popular vote. The map repeat rate which is currently set to 29 is undemocratic but i'm certain that if this was removed altogether there would be a lot of people on here complaining about the same 3/4/5 maps being played over and over. You get my drift.

----------

Seeing what i think is a positive affect that this has had on the server i'm personalty in favour of keeping it, but, it is only right that everyone should have a say and vote on whether to keep it or go back to the old single vote system.

So this poll ends a week Sunday. Whichever has the most votes will be the system we will use, if the votes are even the current score based voting will stay.

I would ask you all to encourage people to join the forum and have their say and vote. It would be unfair (and undemocratic) for just a handful of us to decide this when it will affect hundreds of players

hmmm yeah I agree. Players with larger points wield more power. And just because someone is good at the game doesn't mean their vote should count for more.

Map choosing is a democratic process, each player has 1 vote, if you're map doesn't get chosen, tough. The majority vote stands.

At the same time, I agree with cat. If players were largely left to do as the please, the same few maps would be played over and over. So final say should and does got to mods/admins.

But as far as the point system for voting goes, I think is unfair.

I find this system well because I'm getting them to be better to get more voting, there is a good incentive to practice. And one day
I'll sometimes over 100 points come to select a map. :dancegal:

Me too, Joe^

...pro's & cons to both, yep, and while there can be endless debate taking in all factors to establish an either/or decision - why not a system combining / merging both options here?

I.e.: as per Miauz suggestion previously, a weighted system that can give more experienced players more say, but does not rule out those lower on the score ladder...

Also, perhaps increasing that repeat count a bit more, to help with spreading the range played?

...the answer to the ultimate question is 42 ;)

It's a nice idea, but i'm not sure what we'll gain from it. It doesn't address the issues raised by Nark with it being undemocratic and punishing last joiners/lower scoring players.

Plus, unless anyone here is willing to do it, i'm not going to pay someone to make it unless there's obvious benefits. Sorry.

The repeat rate has gone from 20 to 29 and that's already pushing it to be honest. We did try having it higher at one point, but it tends to kill the server if at least one popular map is not available at all times.

There are 3 new maps currently being made and 2 edits, so maybe we can increases it further in the future
