Possible treatment against campers

Post by [P]etya »

We all know that campers can be highly irritating and there is no efficient way to deal with them. Anti-Camp mutators can irritate non-campers and everybody who knows the system well can easily camp without being detected.

I have been thinking about an idea, which might be efficient. Everybody knows those automatic turrets from Assault. My idea would be adding these turrets to certain areas. Also if players want to control these turrets, then it is also possible by adding those controller posts. Imo it would also make the game more interesting.

Hey Petya,

Campers can indeed be annoying and may push the game more towards an unsportsmanlike mess for all involved when that behaviour is allowed to go on for long. That's the main reason why it's a practice that's been blacklisted on CEONSS and, whenever there, our ingame admins try to keep an eye out for people who routinely play that way and they make sure to get them back in line, either through warning or kicking. If you're being harassed ingame by repeated camping from any specific person, please make sure you let the ingame admins know so they can help out, or to post about it with any evidence you might have here so the team can look into it.

On the topic of employing AS auto-turrets as a means to combat campers, I think there's both practical, technical, as well as theoretical reasons for why that wouldn't be an effective remedy and, thus, why you don't see them used that way in ONS maps.
To start with the practical reasons, people can camp a spawn area or any other part of the map from a number of places and distances; it'd be pretty unrealistic to expect to cover the lot of 'em by placing auto-turrets everywhere and if you didn't, persistent campers would only need to move just a bit outside a covered area to continue doing their thing. Only way to completely deal with the problem that way would be through a lot of auto-turrets and that's not just absurd, but leads us to the second category of reasons: technical.
Contrary to the AS gametype that restricts both teams to sequential, but always confined, areas of the map, ONS is as open terrain as it gets. Meanwhile, in terms of server performance, the auto-turrets aren't exactly cost-free; for each of them to scan for valid targets within their range, a proximity-based loop that checks every other actor's position relative to the turret's sphere has to run each and every tick. Multiply that by as many turrets as you've placed in a map, and add to that the number of flying projectiles they generate on average and pretty soon it all starts getting quite heavy and performance-degrading. Without even getting into the bugs they sometimes manifest (remember not being locked into place after the match is over in SlatedWorld? That's due to the primaries' auto-turrets), forcing all players to suffer in the hopes of deterring a couple of persistent campers would be a senseless and disproportionate choice.
Lastly, as I mentioned earlier, the campers would still try to do their thing even if you peppered the entire map with those sentries, simply because they're humans and that's what humans tend to do: try to game or defy automated systems that are designed to stop 'em. Camping is a people problem, not a technical one and that's why the more effective approach is to fight it by similarly people means, i.e. through putting up server rules and monitoring player activity with ingame admins.

Hope that helped.
Eyes in the skies.

I see. I came up with this idea, when a random player on Barracks camped at the node in the middle with a Goliath and I thought a turret would have prevented that. But yes, on open maps it wouldn't help much.

I like the idea.

Meantime the quickest thing I do is spawn at another node and set it as my default spawn point. Sometimes its even the core.
