Avatar: The legend of Aang and Korra

So recently I got questions about the show I watch recently so I thought about writing a little description about it. Before I begin I have to say that it has nothing to do with the blue men on another planet.

In the world of Avatar there are different nations and each nation has an element, which the inhabitants can bend (control). These are:
The Fire Nation - Fire
Earth Kingdom - Earth
Air Nomads - Air
Southern, Northern Water and Foggy Swamp Tribes - Water

It is good to notice that as the events unfold each bending will have sub-skills which means that certain professional benders are able to do special techniques.
Certain notable sub-skills:
Fire: lighting generation, combustion, Earth: metal and lavabending, Water: bloodbending, plantbending, healing Air: doesn't have one yet

The Avatar is a person, who can bend all four elements and his role in the world is bringing balance and peace, which certain ppl tend to break.
Actually it is 2 show played in the same universe and these are:

The Legend of Aang
This is how everything has begun. In this show Aang, the last airbender in the world is the avatar. The main story is about that the Fire Nation wants to conquer the world and started a war against all of the nations. Certainly since the warmachines of the Fire Nation is quite advanced not many of the nations could survive the attacks. The main plot is stopping the Fire Lord. It has 3 seasons.

The Legend of Korra
After 50 years of the events of The Legend of Aang, Aang dies and a new avatar in the Southern Watertribe is born, who is named Korra. The world has undergone lots of changes. First technology has been improved a lot. A city has been founded for ppl from every nation, called Republic City. It doesn’t have a main plot and each season has different main story
Season 1: In Republic City the ppl, who can’t bend start a revolution against the benders. This group is called „The Equalists” and it is led by a person called Amon.

Season2: After the events of season 1 there will be a war between the Southern and the Northern water tribe. The chief of the Northern watertribe, called Unalaq wants to conquer the Southern Watertribe, because he has plans and he needs the Southern Watertribe for it.

Season3: After the events of season 2 certain ppl who couldn’t bend any kind of element gains the power of airbending and Korra wants to help to rebuild an almost dead nation, the Air Nomads. Meanwhile a group of 4 master benders have escaped their high-security prisons. Originally they wanted to kidnap the Avatar, but their plan failed and they were locked up in special prisons, which were designed to negate their abilities. And now that they have escaped they want to capture the Avatar.

Personally I had my doubts about it when I first heard the title, but when I started to watch it I liked it. Its story is awesome and the its world is well explained. The fight scenes are awesome, although don't expect Dragonball like fights, where every ppl can blow up the world. Here are some fight scenes to see how it works:

Ah, good thread, Petya! Both shows have been on my radar for awhile now ever since I stumbled across some LoK scene on Nick while channel flipping way back when and made me take note about how good the characterization and animation looked ...you know, for a Nick show. The combo of a strong female lead falling quite far off (expected) gendered stereotypes and with very human flaws, as well as the mixed industrial-fantasy theme really sold it for me, so I've been meaning to get into it. Focusing on various other animated shows I'd been hunting for years ago (TMNT2003, The Batman, returning Futurama, ongoing South Park and Robot Chicken, Disney's sadly botched TRON: Uprising, KFP:LoA, ThunderCats 2011, TMNT 2012, to name but a few), sometimes at the periphery of the rls scene, also made me vaguely aware of A:TLA's existence, so this thread gives me the opportunity now to ask a Q I've been wondering about before actually taking the plunge: is going through ATLA kind of a prerequisite in terms of properly getting the story and background or can I just go ahead and start from LoK S1 instead? Would you say the main body of quality of the Avatar saga is found in LoK or in the earlier series instead? From the overview you laid out, you seem to've watched both shows already, so it's from people with informed opinions like that I'm hoping for some insight on this. Cheers.

Well you don't need to watch A:TLA to get the background of LoK, because background information will always be shown in flashbacks. In LoK certain A:TLA characters can be seen when they are adults and it is interesting to see the A:TLA main characters after the events of A:TLA.

Personally I can't decide which is better, because I like both series equally. A:TLA spends more time on explaining how certain elements and their sub-skills work, while in LoK doesn't spend time on explaining these things, because they have been explained in A:TLA. LoK focuses more on the main story of each season, but since A:TLA has one major villain and secondary villains, it allows more adventure, hence more episodes.

In my opinion the latest LoK season (Book 3: Change) is the best by far, because the story is well written and the villains aren't the typical "wholly evil" and their intentions are rather understandable. Every season is worth to watch, because they are awesome, but the recent LoK one is the best in my opinion.

Ah, Avatar! Probably one of the best series I've ever watched. Epic music, amazing combat scenes and deep, philosofical talks, all in one TV show! Who could ask for more?

About your question, Peggy, I'd say it's not necessary to watch ATLA first, but doing so brings kind of nostalgia and good memories when references to it appear on LoK =)
