Map repeat rate

Post by Cat1981England »

How long before maps become available to vote for, also known as the Map Repeat Rate or Repeat Limit - is a setting that almost every server that has map voting enabled makes use of. The idea is simply to stop people voting for the same map over and over again. It is also used on servers such as ours with a very large number of custom maps to stop the same "type" of map being voted for repeatedly or the ultra-popular ones being played too often.

We started from an all time low of 20 and have been increasing it every time a popular map has been added to the roster with the aim of getting it up to 30 while keeping a cap on the overall number of maps, however many people have asked for it to be lowered so they have a better chance of playing their favourite map(s).

Personally i think this is a really bad idea for the reasons mentioned above, but it probably won't do too much harm just to try it for a bit. It was lowed down to 20 over the weekend as requested and will stay there for the next 6 weeks (till the 26th February) so we can all get a good idea of what affect it has.

-----------

If you want it to stay at 20 you're going to need to make a good argument for it, the majority of people voting for 20 in the poll and at least 25 people voting in total. So try and get people from the server onto the forum and voting :readit:

I voted 20, but I think it can be kept at 30 if more maps are added. in the current rotation, there are several lulls you reach where people just seem to look at all the maps and go, "I don't like any of these". then someone picks a random map, 1 vote wins bc no one has a strong preference for any of them, then it kills the server population until a popular map comes back on). I understand the desirability of variety, but everyone has to want that, and at the same time.

I voted 30, but it may have no real effect on most players, i mean even for a 20 map cycle you need to be online for 5h(optimistic 15m round estimation) to see the same map twice a day, then again, you may not play your fav map that evening, cause its hours away. Tempted to vote 20...

Well that settles it then. Thank you for the comments and votes

The map repeat rate will go back to 27 soon and will be slowly increased up to 30 as popular maps are added - so there should always be one available at all times.

Might be a couple of days before this happens though as i want to finish adding up all the map stats for future reference
